Are You Familiar with the Bay Area Ridge Trail?

20 September 2019 | Blog, Local Activities

What else do you find more adventurous than going trekking with friends and family in the woods? People are getting more and more busy in their hectic lives and they love to give some time to themselves — their body, mind and soul. And a wonderful trip outdoors allows us to reconnect with nature and ourselves. The Bay Area Ridge Trail in California offers the perfect opportunity to do just that.

30 years ago the same idea stuck somewhere into the mind of visionary William Penn Mott, Jr. who also served as the director of the National Park Service as well as California State Park and East Bay Regional Park. The idea was to unite the ridges encircling the Bay Area into one continuous park with a 550-mile trail. And his dream ultimately became reality when the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the National Park Service, Greenbelt Alliance, as well as citizen advocates, came together to help form the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council in the
year 1987.

Every year thousands of people hike this trail with their friends and family, become volunteers of the program, and participate in other regional activities. On your visit you can:

  • Win gifts at work
  • Get trail maps & tools to use for searching for great camping nearby
  • Listen to the call of the wild on your journey to North Sonoma Mountain
    Regional Park
  • Beat the heat after your hike at swimming spots near the trail

Bay Area Ridge Trail strives –

“To plan, promote and sustain a connected hiking, cycling, and equestrian trail on the ridge lines around San Francisco Bay—linking people, parks and open space for today and future generations.”
