Napa Without the Drive: Discover William Welch Wines in Martinez, CA

What if we told you there's a beautiful family-owned vineyard tucked into the hills of Martinez, where you can sip locally grown wine, listen to live music, and enjoy a picnic without making the drive to Napa?

Welcome to William Welch Wines and Rancho Las Juntas Vineyard, one of Martinez's most delightful local discoveries.

Just minutes from the neighborhoods of Martinez, Pleasant Hill, and Walnut Creek, this hidden gem offers something increasingly rare: a relaxed, welcoming wine-country experience that feels a world away from the hustle and bustle.

And the story behind the vineyard is every bit as interesting as the wine.

A Family History Dating Back to 1844

The roots of William Welch Wines stretch back more than 180 years.

In 1844, California pioneer William Welch received the Rancho Las Juntas land grant, encompassing approximately 13,324 acres across what is now Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Pacheco, and parts of Walnut Creek.

The name Las Juntas refers to the joining of waterways, including Alhambra and Walnut Creeks.

Today, the family's connection to this land continues through Steve Welch, William Welch's third great-grandson and a sixth-generation Californian.

Although Steve pursued a career in engineering, agriculture remained close to his heart. His efforts to restore the family's historic farm eventually led to the development of Rancho Las Juntas Vineyard.

Together with Genene Welch and winemaker Montgomery Paulsen, the family has helped bring a new chapter to this remarkable piece of Contra Costa County history.

And what a delicious chapter it is!

Wine Grown Right Here in Martinez

When you think of California wine country, Napa and Sonoma probably come to mind.

But Martinez?

Absolutely!

Rancho Las Juntas Vineyard benefits from warm days and cooling evening breezes from the nearby Carquinez Strait, creating favorable conditions for growing wine grapes.

The vineyard specializes in two classic California varieties: Zinfandel and Petite Sirah.

The grapes are cultivated using sustainable vineyard management practices, with careful attention to the soil, climate, and growing conditions.

The result is a distinctly local wine experience, rooted in the same landscape that has supported generations of Contra Costa County agriculture.

It's a wonderful reminder that you don't always have to travel far to discover something exceptional.

Sunday Afternoons Are Made for This

Here's where William Welch Wines really shines.

Picture a sunny Sunday afternoon in Franklin Canyon.

The surrounding hills provide a beautiful backdrop. Friends gather around tables, someone opens a picnic basket, and live music drifts through the vineyard.

There's no need to rush.

Visitors often bring food to enjoy with their wine, turning an afternoon tasting into a leisurely picnic.

The vineyard also hosts live music on Sunday afternoons, adding to the relaxed atmosphere.

It's the kind of place where conversations linger, neighbors reconnect, and an ordinary afternoon becomes something memorable.

Good wine. Good music. Good company. What more could you want?

Two Ways to Experience William Welch Wines

One of the things we love about this local winery is that there are two ways to visit.

Rancho Las Juntas Vineyard — Franklin Canyon

Located at 1830 Franklin Canyon Road in Martinez, the vineyard offers the full countryside experience.

Surrounded by the property's historic landscape, visitors can enjoy locally produced wines, fresh air, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Sunday afternoons are especially popular, with wine tasting and scheduled live entertainment.

William Welch Wines — Downtown Martinez

Prefer to stay downtown?

The winery also operates a tasting room at 837 Main Street in Historic Downtown Martinez.

It's a convenient stop while exploring downtown shops, restaurants, and the waterfront.

And because the tasting room is operated by the same family, visitors can learn more about the history of the property, the vineyard, and the wines themselves.

Two locations, one remarkable local story.

More Than Wine: A Little Piece of Martinez History

Part of what makes William Welch Wines so special is its connection to the community.

The family's agricultural history stretches back generations, long before today's residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, and busy roads transformed Central Contra Costa County.

The winery preserves a connection to that earlier landscape while giving residents a beautiful place to gather and enjoy it.

It's not simply a place to taste wine.

It's a place to experience a little local history, support a family-owned business, and appreciate the natural beauty that makes this part of California so appealing.

Another Reason We Love Where We Live

We talk a lot about the beautiful homes, wonderful neighborhoods, and convenient locations that make Martinez and Pleasant Hill such desirable places to live.

But sometimes it's the little discoveries that make a community feel special.

A family winery tucked into a quiet canyon. A Sunday afternoon filled with music. A conversation with neighbors over a glass of locally grown wine.

These are the experiences that remind us why we love calling this area home.

At the Laura Wucher Team, we love sharing the local places, people, and stories that make our communities unique.
